Recording of Sunday Worship, 24th May

May 24, 2020

It’s wonderful that although our church buildings are closed, our church community is very much alive! Here is the link to share this morning’s worship on YouTube. SHARING OUR FAITH STORIES Very many thanks to Alun Bendle for sharing his faith experiences with us.  We heard short extracts from his story in worship this morning, and click on this link for the full conversation:    It would be wonderful to hear other people’s stories as we journey on together.  It involves a short, recorded conversation with Joe or me, asking you to tell us about three things:  how your faith journey…

Recording of Sunday Worship, 17th May

May 17, 2020

We are so sorry that we had technical issues with our worship on Zoom this morning. Some people were unable join the meeting, and others couldn’t see or hear anything when they did. We have since discovered that this wasn’t due to anything that you, or we, had done, but was a national issue with Zoom. Churches all over the country had the same problem. Thankfully the recording of this morning’s service worked! You can find it here: We are confident that Zoom will have dealt with this issue by next Sunday. Technical difficulties won’t stop us worshipping together. With…

Sunday Worship, 3rd May

May 3, 2020

Worship this Sunday was led by Revd. Rob Church. The link below is a recording of the service. You can download the readings for the service here. Here is a prayer for discernment, taken from morning prayer in Iona: Ever-present God, set your blessings on us as we begin this day together. Confirm us in the truth by which we rightly life; confront us with the truth from which we wrongly turn. We ask not for what we want but for what you know we need, as we offer this day and ourselves for you and to you. Amen.

A Quiz for Christian Aid Week

May 2, 2020

Christian Aid Week this year will be like no other on record with no church; house to house; Tesco or street collections, so all in all, there will be a dramatic drop in the amount we send to Christian Aid by our Benefice during May. At the same time the need for resources to help fight this virus in the poorest countries of the world is right now. With our inability to raise money by our usual methods this Christian Aid Week, Alison Hesketh our Christian Aid co-ordinator, has produced this quiz as a very small way to help. There…

April 2020 – The only impossible journey is the one you never begin

April 2, 2020

Now that’s a great quote from the life coach Tony Robbins. Or how about this: “It’s your road, and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.” One of the things I love about the Christian faith is that it is all about journeying, and pilgrimage. And this month – at the heart of our worship – is the journey through Holy Week to Easter. This begins on Palm Sunday (the 5th of April) at 10.00 am, when we meet in the Market Place to re-enact the procession as Jesus entered Jerusalem.…

Updated guidance on good hygiene practices

March 13, 2020

Everybody is asked to share the Peace in ways which do not involve contact (that is, not shaking hands etc) Following updated advice, Holy Communion will now be distributed in one kind only (that is, the consecrated bread/wafer/host), with the priest alone taking the wine. We are asking everyone to receive the bread/wafer/host on the hand ONLY (not on the tongue). If possible, when attending the Eucharist in particular please sanitise your hands as you come into church, if sanitized gel. Ministers are required to sanitise their hands before and after distributing communion. Everyone will be invited to receive communion standing, rather than kneeling at the communion rail, again to…

Love is in the air! There’s something new for Valentine’s at St Marys’ Church this year, with a special celebration of Love and Commitment at our 10am service on Sunday 16th February. Our theme is love in all its wonderful shapes and sizes – from marriage, friendships and parenting, to our commitment to caring for others and for the world. There will be favourite hymns, readings and prayers on the theme, and the chance to make a personal commitment to cherish our loved ones. Everyone is welcome, with special activities for children in our Little Fishes Sunday School. And perhaps…

December 2019

December 14, 2019

Mary and Joseph. A donkey, the angels, shepherds and the three kings. Bethlehem. A stable, a baby in the manger. King Herod. We all know the Christmas story, from school nativity plays and the television, and from the pictures on Christmas cards. We tell the story again each year, and we become so familiar with it that it can feel like it loses its impact. As we reach December, we begin Advent. It is a special time of preparation, when we get ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s a time to pause and reflect, and to open…
